Read MoreFish Bay is an anchorage in St John.
St John is a charter location in St. John, a yacht charter area in US Virgin Islands.
The anchorages on St John:
Location
Fish Bay is one of the southern anchorages located at St John island in the United States Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. This side of the island is considered the most remote and seldom visited for yacht charters. This is precisely what makes it ideal for those seeking solitude and a relaxed atmosphere to indulge in island life. A narrow bay, it sits on the edge of the Virgin Islands National Park boundaries which takes up more than 60% of the total land area of the island.
Navigation
Arriving from the W side, Fish Bay is located between the much wider Rendezvous Bay and Reef or Genti Bay to the east. This anchorage offers relatively good shelter but is open to the SE which can create some uncomfortable swells. A shallow bay with depths under 3m and plenty of corals that line the side of the entrance.
General Information
This is a charming and often quiet area where visitors come to enjoy the beach and swim in the crystal clear waters. Great for snorkelling due to the shallow waters with plenty of fish and other marine life. A restaurant and bar overlooking the water make for a great sunset spot for a light dinner or a Sunday brunch. Not suitable for provisioning since there are not a lot of services or other stores available in the area.
Provisioning
This anchorage point is not suitable for provisioning. The closest place for yacht charters that need access to fuel and water is the Caneel Bay Shipyard in Cruz Bay further north. There are no organized facilities or amenities in the area so visitors should come prepared. Best for a couple of nights.
Things to Do
Snorkelling and nurse sharks
The shallow waters of Fish Bay are an ideal location for nurse sharks. While it is possible to spot these harmless nocturnal creatures from the shore, it is also possible to snorkel around the area for a chance at exploring more of the rich marine life on offer. Keep in mind that you should not disturb or step onto the coral.
