Overview

Existing as a residential island, Water Island is an attractive destination with a small population and a few establishments. It is the smallest and most recent main island among the U.S Virgin’s islands. Water Island covers an acreage of less than 500, representing a slice of the American Paradise. It is located in the Charlotte Amalie harbour, in the southern part of St. Thomas.

You will enjoy the quiet, tranquil beauty on this island. Water Island promises you a real escape from the busy world.

Navigation

You can reach Water Island by taking a boat or ferry. There is no airport in Water Island, thus you will need to take a flight to Cyril E. King Airport and subsequently proceed to Water Island using a boat. Usually, the ferry leading from St. Thomas to Water Island departs from the Crown Bay Marina in front of the Tickles Restaurant.

General Information

Water Island is mainly served by St. Thomas, which is a seven-minute ferry ride away. This destination depends on St Thomas for education, mail service, flights, and provisions. Water Island employs all forms of water conservation. This destination has a spectacular beach with gentle waves and fine sand. However, it is recommended to visit this place when there are no ships at Crown Bay.

History of Water Island

The earliest known settlers in Water Island were the Taino Indians, who occupied the island in the 15th century. The Europeans who later settled on this island named it Water Island because it contained plenty of fresh water that was lacking on most of the nearby islands.

In the late 1700s, the Danish claimed the Island. However, the 18th and 19th centuries saw the freed mulattos and blacks take ownership. In 1944, the United States purchased the island to safeguard the St. Thomas submarine base during World War II. In 1966, the United States government transferred the ownership to the territorial government, which made Water Island a residential place and a destination for visitors.

Helena Sudek introduced the Lunch Box in Water Island in 1997 to serve meals, specifically on Saturday nights close to the Honeymoon Beach pavilion.
