Read MoreChristiansted Harbor is an anchorage in St. Croix.
St. Croix is a charter location in St. Croix, a yacht charter area in US Virgin Islands.
The anchorages on St. Croix:
Christiansted Harbor is located on the northern coast of St. Croix and is one of the best-protected and deepest harbours for yacht charters in the Caribbean. One could even argue that it is the most beautiful with its grand scenery and the Dutch influence of its architecture evident everywhere you look, as a result of the deep and rich history of St. Croix.
The island of St Croix and specifically Salt River Bay, was where Christopher Columbus first landed during his second expedition to the New World in 1493.
The harbor is home to great anchorages and the best marina and marine facilities that the U.S Virgin Islands has to offer, so it is definitely worth the visit.
Navigation
This is a well-protected anchorage with a semi-challenging approach due to the presence of reefs. Entering or exiting the anchorage is best not attempted during the night. The bottom is deep and offers good holding on sand and grass. On approach, it is important to identify buoy no. 1 and stay clear of Scotch Bank to the E and Barracuda Reef to the W.
After reaching buoy no.6 yachters have the option of heading S via Schooner Channel which leads directly to St Croix Marina or heading southwest towards Protestant Cay.
It must be noted that you should follow these buoyed channels with care because there have been cases of some buoys going missing from time to time.
General Information
This is one of the largest towns on the island and one of the main cultural hubs for visitors. The Christiansted Harbor Seaplane Base is located near the anchorage so you can spend your time watching the planes coming and going during the day. The waterfront is full of restaurants and excellent shops to visit for a quick lunch or dinner. Visitors that require a chandlery and other facilities should head to St Croix Marina and Boatyard on the E side of the harbour.
Things to Do
Historical Buildings
A visit to the city is not complete without a tour of the five most significant buildings of Christiansted that have survived and are prime examples of the Danish influence. Located right next to the waterfront, make sure you walk around the stunning fort Christianvaern, the Scale House, the Danish Custom House, Steeple Building and the Danish West Indie & Guinea Company Warehouse.
Protestant Cay
The small islet of Protestant Cay is a popular spot for daytime swimming, scuba diving and lunch. Yacht charters can also choose to anchor around Protestant Cay.
