History of Water Island

The earliest known settlers in Water Island were the Taino Indians, who occupied the island in the 15th century. The Europeans who later settled on this island named it Water Island because it contained plenty of fresh water that was lacking on most of the nearby islands.

In the late 1700s, the Danish claimed the Island. However, the 18th and 19th centuries saw the freed mulattos and blacks take ownership. In 1944, the United States purchased the island to safeguard the St. Thomas submarine base during World War II. In 1966, the United States government transferred the ownership to the territorial government, which made Water Island a residential place and a destination for visitors.

Helena Sudek introduced the Lunch Box in Water Island in 1997 to serve meals, specifically on Saturday nights close to the Honeymoon Beach pavilion.
