The anchorages on St. Croix:
Location
Located 18 miles from Christiansted, Frederiksted Harbour is a picturesque waterfront town on the W side of St Croix island in the Caribbean. Its long history is visible everywhere you look and is a joy for travellers to explore. Most of the original buildings were destroyed due to an extensive fire in 1878 and were rebuilt in the Victorian style. It is also known as “Freedom City” and this is where the proclamation for the abolishing of slavery was read in 1848.
Navigation
Frederiksted Harbor is a naturally deep port and the only place on the island suitable for visiting cruise ships. Best to anchor S of the big cruise liner jetty unless there is room to approach closer. Well protected anchorage but open from the W meaning it can be subject to swell. The pier has a sand bottom offering very good holding. Moving further N you will find a hard rock bottom under the sand.
General Information
Frederiksted pier is not a suitable provisioning stop for yachters in the Caribbean. However, visitors will find various restaurants, shops and cafes or bars ashore at a fair walking distance. Alternatively, you can catch the local bus to Christiansted that offers more options. Very pleasant and quiet unless the cruise ship is in the port, in which case it can feel very crowded.
Things to Do
Scuba Diving
This is an excellent spot for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts in St Croix. Countless seahorses and other fish can be seen in and around the pier. Care should be taken not to touch or disturb the sea life.
The Beaches
The west end of St Croix where Frederiksted is located is known for its tranquil sandy coves. Don’t miss Sandy Point located further south of the coast, a designated Natural National Landmark that is open during the weekends. It is the longest stretch beach in the U.S Virgin Islands. To the west, Rainbow Beach is another ideal spot for snorkelling and watching the sunset.
